The Pankou Pumped Storage Power Station project in Zhushan County, Shiyang City, Hubei Province, has recently made significant progress. At 11:10 on August 13, the No. 1 construction branch tunnel of the water conveyance system project, constructed by Hydroelectric Bureau No. 15, was successfully completed. The completion of this node has laid a solid foundation for the subsequent diversion tunnel construction.

The Pankou Pumped Storage Power Station is a key project under the Hubei Province’s “14th Five-Year Plan” for pumped storage power. It is also the first approved pumped storage power station project in Shiyang City. The project is not only a hydroelectric cascade integration and transformation project, but also has good benefits in improving the power generation efficiency of conventional hydropower stations, grid peak shaving, emergency accident standby, and energy conservation and emissions reduction.

The No. 1 construction branch tunnel is 424.362 meters long and features a city gate design with an average longitudinal slope of -9.8%. Since the first blasting construction on April 9 this year, the project department has overcome adverse geological conditions and difficulties in excavation under the reservoir water level line, continuously optimized construction techniques, used wet spraying trolleys for anchor and shotcrete support, and strictly followed the construction principles of “short footage, weak blasting” to ensure construction progress and quality.

Next, the project department will continue to carry forward the spirit of the China Power Construction Iron Army and strive to achieve the overall completion goal. The Pankou Pumped Storage Power Station is expected to be completed and put into operation for power generation in 2026, with an annual power generation capacity of up to 350 million kilowatt-hours. It will become an important part of the million-kilowatt new energy base project in Zhushan County, helping Zhushan County build a “demonstration county for clean energy development.” It is of great significance for the development of clean energy, optimization of power structure, and promotion of the implementation of the “dual carbon” goal in Shiyang City.
