The world's tallest concrete-faced rockfill dam has officially met the conditions for the first stage of panel pouring.
On August 31, the Lawa Hydropower Station, the world’s tallest concrete-faced rockfill dam constructed by Hydro No. 12 Bureau, reached a height of 2,580 meters with the entire section of the dam filled, marking that the dam project has met the conditions for the first stage of panel pouring.
The Lawa Hydropower Station is a key component of the Jinsha River upstream clean energy base, one of the nine major clean energy bases under "China’s 14th Five-Year Plan". The design height of the dam is 239 meters, and the crest elevation is 2,709 meters. The dam site is located in a high-altitude, deeply incised, and hot canyon with high seismic intensity and a small width-to-height ratio. Many design indicators exceed the technical standards of existing and under-construction similar projects. The total volume of dam filling is approximately 17 million cubic meters, and there is only a 28-month effective filling period. The dam filling standards are high, the tasks are arduous, and the intensity is great.
To ensure the efficient and high-quality construction of this world-class project, the project department has comprehensively utilized information technology and intelligent technology to empower the construction process, building an all-round intelligent system for blasting, materials, water addition, paving, grouting, and rolling. They actively promote the application of new productive forces in the dam construction process and have pioneered the large-scale use of new energy pure electric dump trucks as the main force for transporting dam materials in the cold highland areas.
With the continuous transformation of scientific and technological achievements into actual productive forces by the project department’s technological innovation team, the Lawa Hydropower Station dam is rapidly rising like “bamboo shoots after the rain,” with all work proceeding efficiently, qualitatively, safely, and stably. To date, the entire section of the dam has reached an elevation of 2,580 meters, and the monthly intensity of material excavation and dam filling has both exceeded one million cubic meters. The monthly rise in dam height is over 14 meters, making it the fastest-rising concrete-faced rockfill dam in China under construction.
After successfully achieving the full section filling of the dam to the top elevation of the first-stage panels, Hydro No. 12 Bureau will continue to carry forward the spirit of the plateau hydropower iron army, which is “not afraid of hardship in hardship, not lacking in spirit in hypoxia, and having a higher realm at high altitudes.” They will intensify the production tests of panel concrete to lay a solid foundation for the pouring of the dam’s concrete panels. They will comprehensively improve the quality and efficiency of dam filling, material excavation, and seepage control system construction. They will strive to achieve the annual target of 8.3 million cubic meters of dam filling and work towards the early completion of the power station to achieve the goal of generating electricity.
